Community Information: Pet Ownership on Condado
Introduction
We want you to be able to enjoy having your dog or cat with you during your stay on Condado de Alhama golf resort. To ensure you understand your responsibilities to the community and other users of the resort a list of requirements is provided below to ensure that pet owners fully understand their responsibilities in relation to Spanish Law, local regulations and the internal rules of Condado.
Failure to follow the rules below may see your animal reported to Security or the site administrators and may ultimately lead to action being taken by the local police or Seprona (Guardia Civil).
There is a Pets Committee that aims to educate and support owners and their pets on Condado. Members of the committee can be contacted at pets@condadoalhama.com.
Dog / Cat ownership requirements
1. Dogs and Cats must be microchipped (fines for failure to do so range from €1500 - €3000) and ideally fully vaccinated but must at a minimum be vaccinated against rabies.
2. Pet owners must be in possession of the animal’s current health certification to comply with Spanish law. Failure to be in possession of this paperwork could result in a fine of up to €300.
3. Cats and dogs must be registered with Administration, even if only visiting for a short holiday.
4. All dogs (not identified as “Dangerous dogs” as described below) should be kept on a lead of not more than 4m length at all times. Failure to do so could result in a fine of €90 - €300, more for a dangerous dog.
5. Dangerous dogs (as defined in Spanish law – see below) should be kept on a leash of not more than 2m in length and must wear a muzzle in public places. They must also be separately registered with the Alhama de Murcia council (failure to comply with this requirement could lead to a fine of €5000 for the owner).
The following breeds of dog are considered to be dangerous in Spain:
Pit bull terriers, Argentinian Dogo, Staffordshire bull terriers, Brazilian Fila, American Staffordshire terriers, Tosa Inu, Rottweiler, Akita Inu
Other breeds with similar features or behaviour may also be classed as dangerous if found in public areas.
6. It is the responsibility of owners to pick up and remove their animal waste while exercising their pets. Bins and waste bags are provided around the resort for this purpose. Failure to do so may result in a fine of €30 – €300. There is CCTV around the resort which may be used to identify owners who fail to clean up after their pet.
7. Owners should prevent excessive noise (barking and howling, meowing) from their pet at all times. Dogs should be kept indoors if left unattended and overnight.
8. Pets should not be left unsupervised for more than 3 days, and in the case of some dog breeds, no more than 24 hours. Note that it is against the law in Spain to permanently keep pets on balconies or terraces, or in storage rooms, vehicles or other similar places.
9. It is against the law to abandon a cat or dog, either indoors or outdoors. If any person is found to have abandoned an animal on Condado this will be reported to the relevant authorities.
10. Whilst it is not a legal requirement, it is recommended that cats and dogs on condado are neutered to help to reduce unwanted pregnancies and to benefit the health of the animal.
11. Dogs and cats are not permitted inside the pool or play areas, the only exception being Guide dogs.
12. Exercising of pets on the Golf course, common land and unbuilt sites around the resort is not encouraged and is undertaken at the owners risk. These areas are private property and not owned by the community.
13. Abandoned and stray cats and dogs should be reported to security by phone (0034 968 328 027 - 24hrs, English speaking) or via What’s App (0034 722 252 720) (including sending a photograph of the cat/dog if possible). Where possible please also inform the site administrators (0034 868 089 724 - office hours) and/or the Pets Committee (pets@condadoalhama.com).
14. It is forbidden to feed stray cats that wander around the complex. A system of TNR (Trap, Neuter and Release) has been introduced on Condado in order to maintain a healthy feral cat population which helps to control the rodent population that exists due to our location in the campo. TNR is a fully donation-led initiative that relies entirely on donations from the generosity of the owners, tenant and residents of the resort.
